Dancers Diary

Robert Curran, Principal Artists of the Australian Ballet and co-founder of JACK Productions shares his diary with us...

Finally the end of August has arrived and I can pause for a moment and take a breath… It has been a busy couple of months and I am looking forward to spending more time on stage and less time in front of my computer.

JACK Productions Ltd has wrapped up its season of ‘Human Abstract’  at the CUB Malthouse and we are reassessing and planning for an exciting year next year. Watch this space!

I withstood the stress of my final assessment for my Vocational Graduate Certificate in Elite Ballet Instruction. Teaching the Level Seven Men for a week was an absolute pleasure, they are a very talented and committed class, in some ways it was a privilege to be allowed to have an impact on their futures but being observed every day by the senior staff of the school was quite a challenge!

Dance Creation at the National Theatre in St Kilda was a resounding success, especially for Lucas Jervies, director of JACK Productions Ltd with his work for The Australian Ballet School reminding the Melbourne dance community of his talent and innovation. Onwards and upwards Lucas!

The Australian Ballet is about to open its ‘Edge of Night’ program with two ballets from Stephen Baynes and a world premier from Tim Harbour and I am very much looking forward to dancing in this program. Firstly it will be interesting to revisit ‘At the Edge of Night’ a ballet that I danced in my second year in the company, a very big opportunity at the time, with the great Lisa Bolte. I adore the Rachmaninov Preludes and the choreography is so subtle and poignant, and in rehearsing this latest incarnation I find myself wondering if I was aware, or if I was capable of the awareness, of how special this ballet is and how much it has to offer both dancers and audiences. Secondly I am super excited about being a part of Tim Harbour’s first ballet for The Australian Ballet’s mainstage program. I went through The Australian Ballet School with Tim and I am so proud of the achievements he has made and I am so keen to give him my best in ‘Halcyon’.
