Library
Carefully collated and catalogued by honorary life member Ron Ewington,
the Ausdance (Vic) library boasts a variety of dance resources.
There are a number of monographs covering: Art, Arts administration,
Biographies, Choreography, Community dance, Companies, Contemporary
dance, Costumes, Criticism Dictionaries, Directories, Education,
Encyclopaedias, Guides, History of dance, Music and movement, Notation,
Poetry, Philosophy, Repertory, Research, Social dance, Theatre
and theatre training, Year books.
In addition, there is a range of publicity flyers, newspaper cuttings, photographs, programmes and posters featuring the major dance companies, small companies, indigenous dance and dance companies, independent artists, major dance schools, venues, events and festivals. There are programmes from the Australian Ballet dating back to 1962!
The library holds a complete collection of the Ausdance (Vic) magazine Kinesis as well as other Ausdance state newsletters and the national magazine Dance Forum. Periodicals also include Dance Australia, Writings on Dance and Brolga. There are copies of dance conference papers from all of the Ausdance conferences dating back to the founding meetings in 1977, Movement and Performance (MAP) and Green Mill.
Ausdance (Vic) holds a number of dance videos ranging from small independent projects to community dance and performances by major companies.
Over the years Ausdance (Vic) has received several donations, providing unique and often quirky pieces to our collection. Alongside the Dame Peggy Van Praagh and the Patel Walker Collections, which include books from their personal libraries, are anonymous scrapbooks lovingly collated in the early 70s.
While lending out material is not permitted, Ausdance (Vic) does have a pleasant reading room with access to a video/DVD player and a photocopier. Feel free to meet by appointment and browse through the library. Searches can be made on the database with the aid of a staff member and further aid can be sought from the librarian, Ron Ewington.
