Dance Across theDance Across the Domains 2011 Domains ‘Many Cultures’ Primary and Secondary Conference 2011

Ausdance Victoria’s annual conference, Dance Across the Domains was another great success this year. It provided a unique opportunity for both Primary & Secondary teachers to receive professional development in dance teaching.
In 2011 the theme was ‘Many Cultures’ and participants were given the opportunity to take part in workshops working in varying styles of dance including African, Indonesian, Indian, Indigenous & Korean.  Other sessions included seminars on Dance & Literacy, Multimedia & ICT, and students with special needs. The group also had a visit from Inga Peulich, The Parliamentary Secretary for the Arts.

Keep your eyes for details on next year’s conference by visiting the Ausdance Victoria website at www.victoriandancedirectory.com.au  or contact Ausdance at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to register for 2012!

VET in the VCE Dance Professional Development Day 3

VET in the VCE Dance PD 3 for new schools took place at the Footscray Community Arts Centre on Tuesday the 16th August. A small group of energetic and enthusiastic teachers came together to look at the Certificate II in Dance 21764VIC program, and to discuss how to deliver the program in Partnership with Ausdance VIC. We looked at samples of the partnership paperwork and discussed what things are required at what stages of the year. Then after lunch we looked at individual units within the qualification, as well as samples of student work from several units, so that teachers got a feel for the standards required.

Next year (2012) will be the final year for students to enroll in Certificate II in Dance 21764VIC, as the Certificate will expire in July 2012, to be replaced by the new Certificate II in Dance CUA20111. In 2012 Ausdance Vic is piloting delivery of Certificate II in Dance 21764VIC with two interstate high schools. If this pilot is successful, we will offer partnerships for delivery of the Certificate II in Dance to high schools across Australia from 2013 onwards.

INDUSTRY DAYS

Nederlands Dans Theater I - Industry Day for Dance Students

After a 14 year absence, the stratospheric talents of arguably the world’s best contemporary dance company returned to the Arts Centre in an Australian exclusive performance season in July this year.  Ausdance Victoria together with the Arts Centre presented an opportunity for Secondary VET and VCE Dance students to witness this innovative company in rehearsal and meet with the Rehearsal Director, Paul Lightfoot for a Q&A session in the State Theatre.
The feedback from the day was great – here are some of the comments:

“It opened my eyes to Contemporary…and motivated me to dance”
“It gave me a better idea of what dance is about. It was a great to see the rehearsal process – a fantastic experience!”

Ausdance Victoria together with KAGE & the Malthouse Theatre presented a unique opportunity for secondary VET & VCE Dance Students to attend a workshop with Artistic Director Kate Denborough & Performers Gerard Van Dyck & Fiona Cameron. The students learnt some challenging choreography from KAGE’s new work Look Right Through Me. They also saw the set design, participated in a Q & A session before a tour of the Malthouse Theatre, followed by the matinee performance of Look Right Through Me.

Dance, Design & the Art of Costume: Industry Day for Dance Students

On the 24th of October 2011, Ausdance Victoria together with The Arts Centre presented a wonderful opportunity for VET/VCE Dance students to visit the Art Centre’s Performing Arts Collection & to take part in a Costume Design Workshop with designer Mark Wagner.

Drawing on the Art Centre's Performing Arts Collection - such as costumes from The Australian Ballet's Divergence - students visited the Resource Centre to view and discuss several costumes before applying the creative process to a costume design of their own.

We will present this workshop again in 2012 so keep your eyes peeled on the Ausdance Vic website and e-bulletin!

TALKS & FORUMS

Free Pre-show Forum for Nederlands Dans Theater I

Ausdance Victoria & the Victorian Arts Centre provided an exclusive, free Nederlands Dans Theater I pre-show forum on Friday 15 July. Each gave a short presentation on their dance company’s work, and then participated in a stimulating and highly engaging Q & A session about the lives, work & struggles of an Artistic Director, ensuring the involvement of the audience throughout. The evening included drinks and canapés and finished with an outstanding performance by the world renowned Nederlands Dans Theatre in the State Theatre.
